Anime News Network reports that Guin Saga creator Kurimoto Kaoru passed away yesterday evening. According to the report, she was 56 and died due to pancreatic cancer. She was best known for Guin Saga, her 126 volume unfinished fantasy epic, but in addition to that she was also an early pioneer and inspiration of the BL genre as well as a prolific writer in other genres.
It’s a real shame for her to pass away at only 56, when she had so much of her life and writing career still in front of her Condolences to her family.
With regards to her works, I wonder if she left any notes on how she planned to end the series? It’s unfortunate that such a long-running and famous series will likely be left unfinished, and even if someone is commissioned to finish the series in her place it just won’t be the same.
Vertical published the first five of her Guin Saga books in English, I believe, as well as the manga edition. It’s a pity more of her works haven’t been made available in English – she’s had a really prolific career, and not just with Guin Saga.
This picture is irrelevant, I just think Anya looks cute in it.
Megahouse G.E.M. Zero turned up yesterday, after I had to reschedule the delivery from Tuesday because the post wasn’t delivered until after I left for lectures (by ten minutes, no less). It was raining, but not enough to soak through the HLJ box thankfully. I felt sorry for the man delivering it, though ^^;
The figure quality is great – the promotional images were really accurate. The detail on the figure is really nice, and I especially like the metal chain attached to his sword belt. He really stands out on my bookshelf, and I was lucky to be able to fit him on because even with my extra-deep shelving the base of the figure is a little large, and he’s fairly tall compared to the rest of my collection. I might see if I can borrow a camera from one of my housemates to do a couple of photos, other wise it will have to wait until late June when I’m back from university.
Due to budget constraints, he’s actually the first PVC I’ve bought so far – the only other one I own is a huge Ryuk from Jun Planning (R.I.P.) that aforementioned housemate gave me for Christmas last year. I love buying Figma and Nendoroid figures, but it’s nice to have the larger, high-end ones as well. I’ll hopefully soon have the Gift Saber I ordered earlier this week, though. I don’t know how all my figure boxes are going to fit into the car when I go home, because there’s no way I’m going to flatten them and they’re starting to take up quite a bit of room.
Pokémon Platinum comes out soon in the UK, and one of the larger video game chains offered the Giratina figure as a preorder bonus, so I went for that rather than importing myself an American copy of the game like I did with Diamond. It seems as though they’re sending out the figures early so as to deal with the rush on release more easily, so mine should turn up around the end of next week or the beginning of the week after if they send it out towards the start of the week. The poor postal workers won’t like me over the next fortnight or so. Aside from Saber and Giratina, I ordered some Black Rock Shooter goodies (a notebook and a mug) and a couple of Sengoku Basara One Coin trading figures (blind boxed, I managed to grab them from Play-Asia shortly before they sold out). No more online shopping for me for a while, if possible.

Cute, unrelated image from moe.imouto to make up for unpleasant rant.
It’s been a while since I last updated! I’ve been pretty busy with an essay and then lots of work for my Classical Japanese class. I’ve also been busy working on fanart of Danny Choo’s mascot Mirai, which should be finished soon. She’s really cute, so I wanted to have a go at drawing her even though my style isn’t really typical to the art style people normally draw her in (my female characters don’t have much moe appeal when I draw them – I usually go for sexy and/or tough).
Now I’ve got the good stuff out of the way, I’m afraid I have a rant for today’s post, and I’m going to be opening a rather large can of worms ^^;
There’s been quite a bit of discussion lately on some of the larger otaku blogs over the Equality Now vs Rapelay debacle (short story for the unaware: Japanese company produces game where aim is to rape women which somehow ends up being sold in the UK, game comes to the attention of the public in English-speaking countries, American feminist group moves to have it banned, otaku rage ensues). I’ve already expressed my opinions on banning games like Rapelay over on DC, so I’m going to put that aspect of the debacle aside because it’s a different issue I want to tackle here. I realise that I’m just inviting drama and trouble here because I’m probably going to express some unpopular opinions, and no doubt insult some people while I’m at it, but I don’t like having to push aside my personal opinions all the time just to be able to play nice with the rest of the otaku fanbase, and I felt that I needed to express myself on this topic.
Disclaimer: if you are an otaku and you don’t hold the points of view I will be referring to, then this post isn’t about you. I am well aware that not all otaku are like this – after all, I’m an otaku myself.

I can't wait until mine arrives
So I sent the payment over to HLJ for Megahouse GEM Zero figure earlier today, so it looks like they managed to fulfill my preorder. I’m glad, although my wallet isn’t since including the shipping he cost me nearly £65. It was what I expected and I had separated the money from my main account back in January, but it’s still a lot of money. It’s being sent by SAL, which lessens my chances of getting caught with extra charges courtesy of UK customs, but I might still get unlucky with something so expensive. Still, hopefully it shouldn’t be too much since it’s Royal Mail handling things rather than a service like Parcelforce. I don’t know when the arrival is likely to be. He’ll probably ship in the next day or two, but delivery could be anything from a week and a half to three weeks in my experience. Maybe because of the awful economy he’ll arrive as quickly as my last figure did? I can only hope. He should be a great figure, though. Ami Ami has great images as usual, and he looks very good. I like the base they decided on – it’s an interesting shape. Villetta looks lovely as well, minus the optional random pink jacket thing which kind of clashes, to be honest. Wish I could have afforded her as well.
I decided to pass on the Wave Yoko I had been thinking about, which is probably just as well given the amount of money I had to spend today on figures. When I looked around for pictures of the actual release, I didn’t like her as much as the promo pictures. I wasn’t so bothered about the colours, but I really didn’t like the change in face, even for just over £20. Hopefully Nia will turn out better, because I really like the short hair version of Wave’s figure.
Sometimes the search terms people reach my blog by are confusing. This one was somewhat bewildering, although sadly (or perhaps thankfully?) it wasn’t anything too bizarre. I’m not exactly sure how they got to my blog through it, though. Maybe they were searching really, really hard and found my blog somewhere near the end of Google search? Perhaps I spent too long talking about fanservice when I covered the first episode of Basquash? I get a lot of people making their way over to this post when searching the internet for a certain Gundam Meister wearing a dress.

I’ve had this post partially written since Sunday, so I thought I better finally get around to actually finishing it off. Spoilers for the episode, of course.
Click to see full-size. From left to right - top row: Oscar (Rose of Versailles), Himawari (xxxHolic), C.C. (Code Geass), Saber (Fate/Stay Night), bottom row: Tieria (Gundam 00), Reinhard (Legend of the Galactic Heroes), Kei (Moyashimon), The Medicine Seller (Mononoke)
Someone posted a template for this over at Dannychoo.com and I jumped on the bandwagon and made one of my own.
I had trouble picking just eight characters. There were also quite a few characters who I adore, but didn’t quite fit for a harem (Blood and Ishuca from Koori No Mamono No Monogatari amongst others – they belong to each other ^^; ). Clearly I have a thing for proud, blond(e) characters, with Oscar, Saber and Reinhard being among my chosen eight. I had a hard time picking whether to have Yuuko or Himawari from xxxHolic, since I like them both, but Himawari is cuter, so I went with her in the end.
On a completely different topic, I ordered Nendoroid Kaito today. In order to fit into my budget, I really needed to get him at the start of this month, so I got him from a Japanese eBay seller (HLJ sold out on release, and it will be ages before any of the domestic stores get him in stock).

Looking through my blog stats page at referrals and searches, I was surprised to see that quite a few people have come here through searching Google for things related to Subeta, as well as the occasional person looking for things through the WordPress tag for Subeta. I feel like it’s cheating the visitors in a way – my blog has nothing really to do with Subeta besides the occasional mention! It’s certainly odd to see my blog appear on the first page of Google when someone is looking for the Subeta Twitter page or something (after writing this entry I’m probably going to get even more people coming through for that, aren’t I?).
On a completely unrelated topic, my Nendoroid Len is probably arriving on Friday. The mail arrived when I was at lectures (as usual) on Tuesday, so I rearranged for Friday because I have no lectures at all. Friday is going to become my figure day, isn’t it? Also turning up should be my copy of the Kogorin (a dictionary of archaisms) which I shall be using for the module on Classical Japanese I’m taking this semester. It can’t be anything else, because the couple of small items I’m waiting for would probably fit through the letterbox, and won’t be arriving this quickly anyway.
I put up a temporary header image with a quick sketch of my mascot character. Their design might change a little before I get everything finalised, but this will do for now. They ended up looking a somewhat alike to Kagamine Len in this image. The other character sketches don’t resemble him at all, but this one did for some reason. I’ll get a proper image done within a couple of days, hopefully.
My Livejournal has been getting a little clogged up with posts about figures and things recently, so I thought I’d start a new blog for those sorts of things. That way things about my daily life won’t be mixed in with otaku-related topics.
You can call me Selidor or Robin. I am currently nineteen years old, and I live in the UK (my time is split between living in Yorkshire and in Sussex). I’m currently in my second year of studying Japanese at university. Anime and manga make up a large part of my hobbies. I enjoy drawing, and have two webcomics. I’ve also been collecting anime figures for about the past six months or so. My collection is small at the moment, but it’s growing. I’ll write about my figures in a new post at some point. I don’t have a proper camera at the moment, so I probably won’t be able to include any images yet, as neither my phone nor my webcam can do any of my figures justice.
Aside from anime and manga, I also enjoy archery (Western-style, not kyuudou), and of course learning Japanese. Providing I pass my exams, I will be attending a Japanese university starting in late September this year.
I’ll try and update this at least once a week, and more if I have the time to. I have an art commission to finish for tomorrow, but I hope to get a layout set up properly over the next few days.
